Grounded in Christian Science practice, the Spiritual Life Center at Cox Cottage welcomes students of all faith backgrounds to participate in its programs.
Christian Science theology values people of all faiths because it teaches that God loves everyone unconditionally. Mary Baker Eddy, the founder of Christian Science, wrote, “Love [God] is impartial and universal in its adaptation and bestowals” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 13). She also wrote, “God is universal; confined to no spot, defined by no dogma, appropriated by no sect” (Miscellaneous Writings 1883-1896, p. 150).
Through spiritual care, worship, discussion groups, structured times for prayer, weekly faith talks, spiritual song, retreats, and more, the Spiritual Life Center offers a wide range of spiritual and religious programming that encourages you to discover deeper meaning and purpose in your life, and to grow in your relationship to God.
We invite all students to participate in Spiritual Life programs at Principia College. Here are just a few examples of our activities.
Faith in Action
Faith in Action programs, held weekly on Friday mornings, encourage students to explore and ponder some of the most pressing issues of our day, through the lens of faith.
How does faith help us tackle global issues? How does faith enable us to love instead of hate? Does faith have a role in protecting and shaping democracy and freedom? Can faith help you in your personal life?
These are just some of the questions explored through an inspiring series of guest speakers, faculty, and coaches who share their struggles and victories found through their faith.
Sunday Evening Sing
Come sing a mix of spiritual songs and classic hymns with a loving, supportive community of friends. Held every Sunday in the chapel, the Sunday Evening Sing affords the community a chance to celebrate inspiring and joyful music, laugh, find peace, and spiritually prepare for the start of the academic week.
Quiet Time
Quiet Time is built into the daily rhythm of campus life at Principia College. It is generally observed late morning before lunch, when students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to pray for the Principia College community and themselves. Some programs are also available during Quiet Time that invite the community to come together in focused prayer. It is a sacred, short time of day that offers students a chance to pause, spiritually recharge, and support one another through prayer.
Christian Science Practitioners
Cox Cottage hosts an office space for Christian Science practitioners to meet privately with students for prayer. Christian Science practitioners pray for others facing any challenge, whether illness, injury, stress, depression, relationship problems, financial issues, or whatever is going on in someone’s life. They are happy to talk and pray with you to provide the spiritual care you need or desire.
